Anniversary Flowers Perth | Wedding Flowers Perth

Marriage is an important occasion in anyone’s life. When you make the choice to spend your life with that special someone, each year that goes by is a testament to that loving unification that was your wedding day.

A wedding anniversary is the opportunity to celebrate how much you love each other, how strong your marriage is, how long you have been married for, and how you have withstood the tests of time, together. It is a promise to build on that love for another year and the best way to show you mean that promise is with anniversary flowers.

Flowers are usually a part of relationships from the beginning. From that first date to Valentine’s Day to birthdays, right through to the wedding day. It is only befitting that your anniversary be marked with a beautiful fresh floral arrangement.

Flowers are a universal way to celebrate wedding anniversaries, and each flower has it’s own meaning. For every year of your wedding anniversary there is a traditional anniversary flower to offer to the one you love

Asiatic Lilies Perth | Lilies Perth | Perth Florist

Lilies give their name to the large Family Liliaceae, which contains about 100 species. Several are used as cut flowers with the most common being dealt with here.

Lilies grow from bulbs, and are forced into flower almost year round to satisfy demand. They are tremendously popular flowers and together are ranked #5 in cut flower sales from the Dutch Flower Auctions in 2004.

LA: LA stands for ‘Longiflorum + Asiatic’ which are the two parents that gave rise to this relatively recent member of the lily family. LA’s are intermediate in size between the two parents and come in a range of pastel colours: yellow, orange, dark red and white like Asiatics, but much paler in colour. They also have a very attractive scent – far more subtle than L. longiflorum.

How to Make Cut Flowers Last Longer in a Vase

Flowers Are Part of a Living Plant

The essential thing to remember when handling flowers is that they are (or rather were) part of a living plant. From the moment they are cut, to the moment when you put them into a vase with water, they need to be treated with care.

If you are lucky enough to be able to grow flowers in your own garden, bring them indoors as soon as possible after cutting. This will make the transition from soil to water quick and relatively painless for your flowers and wilI cause the least trauma to the cut stems.
However most people buy their cut flowers from a supermarket or specialist florist's store. This means that some hours may pass between buying and the time when the flowers are once again immersed in water.

Caring For Your Fresh Flowers

Before make sure that every part of the bouquet or bunch of flowers looks in good condition. Check that none of the leaves have withered or turned brown or show signs of disease. The flowers should be either in bud or only slightly open.
When you get home, make sure the vase you intend to use is really clean. It is a good idea to rinse it with bleach. Use a scouring pad to remove all traces of mildew or algae from previous flower bouquets.
Before arranging the flowers in the vase, you need to condition them first. This means allowing them to rehydrate for a couple of hours and absorb the moisture they have lost since being cut from their roots.

Conditioning and Preparing Your Flowers

When the stem draws water up into the flower heads it also takes water to any leaves below the flowers. So the first step is to remove any excess leaves that you do not want in the finished arrangement. Make sure you remove any leaves that will be below the water level of the vase as these will rot and taint the water. Then take off any remaining leaves that you do not want for contrast color next to the blooms.

By the time your flowers or plants arrive in your home, they will probably not have been watered for some time. So you must rehydrate them. Fill a bucket with tepid water (room temperature) or you could fill a kitchen sink with water instead. Trim the base of each stem so that there is a fresh raw surface ready to suck up the clean water. Place the cut flowers into the bucket (or sink) so that the entire stem is submerged and the flower heads rest on top of the water. They should be left like this for a minimum of half an hour and up to two hours depending on their condition.

After having a good drink, the flowers and stem will be refreshed and be in a better state to last in your home. Gently lift each stem individually from the water shaking off the excess and then arrange them in your vase. The video below shows how a professional florist carries out this task.

Change the vase water regularly to make your flowers last longer. Remember to renew the plant food (or your home-made equivalent) when you do this.

Flowers that have woody stems (for example roses and hydrangeas) last longest if you arrange them in a deep water vase. Flowers that have fleshy stems (for example tulips and daffodils) can do better if the water level is kept shallow as this prevents their stems rotting.
When you are arranging the flowers, the shorter you cut the stem, the longer the flowers will last as the heads don’t have as far to draw up the water.

Gerbera Perth | Gerbars Perth | Gerbera Flowers Perth

The popularity of the gerbera has sky rocketed since the 1990’s and it is now rated #4 on the Dutch Auction System.

There are now over 200 varieties available in every colour imaginable including blue! Newer varieties have double petals, giving a fluffy look to the flower, or thin, spidery petals, or wider, thicker petals. Breeders include Landsbergen (Holland), Pressman (Holland), Terra Nigra (Holland), and Florist de Kwakel (Holland). Check these breeders’ websites for more information.

In the past 10 years mini gerberas (or germinis) have become more popular – they are the same as their larger cousins, but about half the size and are better suited to smaller arrangements. Gerberas are grown in glasshouses, mostly close to the southern capital cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

The aim with standard (large) gerberas is to keep the flowerhead from flopping over. To do this we must try and stop the stem ends from becoming plugged with bacteria from dirty water or air bubbles.

Chrysanthemums Perth | Chrysanthemum Delivery Perth

Chrysanthemums have been intensively bred for centuries, resulting in a number of cut flower forms. The most common are sprays, with several flowers per stem, which come in every colour, except blue. These are tremendously popular cut flowers due to their bright colours and long vase life. In 2004 they were rated #3 on the Dutch Flower Auction system.

The other main chrysanthemum type are called 'disbuds', which consist of one large flower per stem. Instead of letting the plant produce side shoots which would each bear flowers, as in sprays, all these shoots are removed, leaving only one central stem, which produces one large flower. All the energy of the plant is directed into this bud which then grows to a huge size. Blooms come in many different forms, many looking very like dahlias. Some are tight petalled, with all the petals curling upwards. Some have loose petals which look like spider legs, hence the common name ‘spiders’.
Large breeders include Royal Van Zanten (Holland & UK), Fides (Holland), and Serres de Oisseme (France). Check these breeders' websites for more information.

Chrysanthemums tend to be grown in glasshouses or polyhouses, and like roses, the main areas of production have become more southern – Spain and Africa for Europe and South America. In Australia they are grown close to the capital cities, particularly in Victoria (Dandenong Ranges and Mornington Peninsula) due to the relatively cool climate with low humidity.

Orchids Perth | Perth Florist | Perth Flowers Delivery

The orchid family is truly immense, with an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 species and over 100,000 varieties bred by horticulturalists. It is estimated that a further 800 new species are added each year. Orchids occur in every habitat on the planet, except for Antarctica and true deserts.

With the possible exception of the rose, no other flower inspires such wonder or passion as the orchid. Orchids are relatively promiscuous, which means they inter-breed quite easily and explains the 100,000 or so hybrids we have today. Despite this huge variety there are only a handful of orchid types used in floristry – mostly Cymbidium, Dendrobium (Singapores) and Oncidium hybrids.

Dendrobium: With over 1200 species, this is a large genus with many native Australian species. Flowers are much smaller and delicate than Cymbidium, and form sprays of up to 50 flowers per branch. Stems are short, typically 20 to 40 cm.

The most popular Dendrobium is called the Singapore orchid, which typically has a dozen or so delicate flowers per stem in white, purple, pink, green, red or yellow. All are imported.
