VERONICA FLOWER PERTH | VERONICA FLOWERS PERTH WA

VERONICA FLOWER PERTH | VERONICA FLOWERS PERTH WA

With over 500 species there are many more Veronicas used as garden plants than as cut flowers, as most are short-stemmed or ground covers. The exceptions are V. virginica and V. spicata. V. virginica, also called Culver’s Root, has long spikes filled with small, white, tubular flowers.

There can be 6 or more spikes per branch. The root, as the name suggests, was used as an herbal remedy for stomach upsets. V. spicata has one spike per branch that may be white, blue or pink in colour; flower-heads are long, sometimes curved spikes with the lowest flowers opening first. Leaves of both species are long and lance-shaped and a soft olive-green in colour.

Veronicas are grown in polyhouses. Supplies come mostly from Victoria, Qld and NSW.

KANGAROO PAW FLOWER PERTH | KANGAROO PAW PERTH

KANGAROO PAW FLOWER PERTH | KANGAROO PAW PERTH

The French botanist, de Labillardiere, first collected the kangaroo paw, Anigozanthos rufus, near Esperance in 1792. The generic name Anigozanthos is probably derived from the Greek 'anises', meaning 'unequal' or 'oblique', and 'anthos', meaning 'flower', in reference to the division of the floral extremities into six unequal parts. The red-green A. manglesii is the state emblem of Western Australia.

These flowers are mainly pollinated by birds. The shape of the flowers and the position of the pollen-bearing anthers is a feature which allows pollen to be deposited on the head of feeding birds. This pollen is transferred from flower to flower as the birds feed. Different species usually deposit pollen on different areas of the birds' head. This means that pollen from one species is unlikely to be deposited in the flowers of another species. For more information visit the Australian National Botanic Gardens website

ORIENTAL LILIES PERTH | LILY FLOWERS PERTH

Lilies give their name to the large Family Liliaceae, which contains about 100 species. Several are used as cut flowers with the most common being dealt with here. Lilies grow from bulbs, and are forced into flower almost year round to satisfy demand. They are tremendously popular flowers and together are ranked #5 in cut flower sales from the Dutch Flower Auctions in 2004.

Christmas Lily: tall dark green stems with glossy green foliage topped with one or two large white trumpet-shaped flowers. Heavily scented. In the northern hemisphere these lilies are called ‘Easter Lilies’, whereas in Australia they are produced specifically for the Christmas period. Some Christmas lilies may have red/scarlet lines on the flower – it is more likely these are L. regale, or the Regal Lily.

Oriental Lily: tall green stems with large glossy leaves with two or three large flower per stem. Flower petals reflex back upon opening revealing an interior often spotted brown or black. Orientals can be found in white, pale pink, red or yellow and are renowned for their heavy fragrance, large flower size and long vase life.

Berzelia Perth | Berzelia Flower Perth

The Berzelia genus are found in South Africa, and have been grown in Australia by Protea enthusiasts for the last 20 years or so.

B. lanuginosa is a quite distinct looking cut flower as each branch is topped with masses of small (@ 5mm) green (or pale white late in the season) balls. These are the flower buds that can open to form fluffy round flowers.

Leaves are long and strap like, arising from the tough woody stems. B. galpini is another Berzelia species sometimes available – it has larger ball-type flowers with a scaly appearance.

Carnations Perth | Carnation Flowers Perth

Carnations Perth | Carnation Flowers Perth

Long the most popular cut flower after the rose, the carnation’s star has been on the wane over the past twenty years or so. In 2004 carnations were the 10th most popular flower sold at Aalsmeer, but they remain a very popular traditional flower in England, where they have been sold since at least the 16th century. They seem to be making a comeback, however, which is not surprising as this flower has a huge range of strong colours, is long-lasting and is scented.

Carnations come in two forms. Single flowers per stem are called 'Sims', several flowers per stem are 'sprays'. They come in every colour, except black, and there are even genetically-engineered 'blue' forms, bred in Australia, that range from pale blue to mauve. Large breeders include Barberet & Blanc (France), Hilverda (Holland), P. Kooij & Son (Holland) and Selecta Klemm (Germany). Check these breeders’ websites for more information.

Carnations tend to be grown in glasshouses or polyhouses, and like roses, the main areas of production have become more southern – Spain and Africa for Europe and South America, Colombia in particular, has taken over from California as the main supplier of carnations into the USA for example. In Australia, carnations are grown in glasshouses, mostly close to the southern capital cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

These flowers are very sensitive to ethylene gas, which makes their petals curl inwards and shrivel. Growers should treat bunches with an anti-ethylene agent before they are sold.

Sunflowers Perth | Sunflower Delivery Perth

Bright and cheerful and a real summer favourite, sunflowers traditionally only came with bright yellow petals surrounding a dark centre. New varieties are now available which have pale brown, orange, maroon or even striped petals, and green-yellow centres. There are even double-petalled forms which are fluffy looking with no dark centre at all.

Sunflowers are annuals, which means they only flower once, then die off, and new seed need to be planted each season. They can grow up to 3 metres tall, but cut sunflowers are rarely over 1 metre.

They are grown as field crops in the cooler areas near Melbourne, Sydney, in Tasmania and in SA and WA.

LA: LA stands for ‘Longiflorum + Asiatic’ which are the two parents that gave rise to this relatively recent member of the lily family. LA’s are intermediate in size between the two parents and come in a range of pastel colours: yellow, orange, dark red and white like Asiatics, but much paler in colour. They also have a very attractive scent – far more subtle than L. longiflorum.

Chrysanthemums Perth | Chrysanthemums Perth Delivery | Chrysies Perth

Chrysanthemums Perth

Chrysanthemums have been intensively bred for centuries, resulting in a number of cut flower forms. The most common are sprays, with several flowers per stem, which come in every colour, except blue. These are tremendously popular cut flowers due to their bright colours and long vase life. In 2004 they were rated #3 on the Dutch Flower Auction system.

The other main chrysanthemum type are called 'disbuds', which consist of one large flower per stem. Instead of letting the plant produce side shoots which would each bear flowers, as in sprays, all these shoots are removed, leaving only one central stem, which produces one large flower. All the energy of the plant is directed into this bud which then grows to a huge size.

Blooms come in many different forms, many looking very like dahlias. Some are tight petalled, with all the petals curling upwards.
Some have loose petals which look like spider legs, hence the common name ‘spiders’.

Large breeders include Royal Van Zanten (Holland & UK), Fides (Holland), and Serres de Oisseme (France). Check these breeders' websites for more information.

Chrysanthemums tend to be grown in glasshouses or polyhouses, and like roses, the main areas of production have become more southern – Spain and Africa for Europe and South America. In Australia they are grown close to the capital cities, particularly in Victoria (Dandenong Ranges and Mornington Peninsula) due to the relatively cool climate with low humidity.

Dendrobium Orchids Perth | Orchids Perth | Perth Florist

The orchid family is truly immense, with an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 species and over 100,000 varieties bred by horticulturalists. It is estimated that a further 800 new species are added each year. Orchids occur in every habitat on the planet, except for Antarctica and true deserts.

With the possible exception of the rose, no other flower inspires such wonder or passion as the orchid. Orchids are relatively promiscuous, which means they inter-breed quite easily and explains the 100,000 or so hybrids we have today. Despite this huge variety there are only a handful of orchid types used in floristry – mostly Cymbidium, Dendrobium (Singapores) and Oncidium hybrids.

Dendrobium: With over 1200 species, this is a large genus with many native Australian species. Flowers are much smaller and delicate than Cymbidium, and form sprays of up to 50 flowers per branch. Stems are short, typically 20 to 40 cm. The most popular Dendrobium is called the Singapore orchid, which typically has a dozen or so delicate flowers per stem in white, purple, pink, green, red or yellow. All are imported.

Native Flowers Perth | Native Flower Delivery Perth

With over 25,000 species of flowering plants, Australia is only matched by South Africa in the abundance and diversity of its native flowers.

There are so many flowering plants in Australia that they haven’t even named them all yet – some botanists estimate there are over 30,000 species. Many of these are endemic, which means they are found nowhere else.

Native flowers have been used to decorate Australian homes since settlement, but became more popular during Federation (1901) and the Bicentennial celebrations (1988). Now many forms are used as cut flowers, both locally and internationally.

Protea's Perth | Protea Flowers Perth

Protea is a large genus with over 90 species, all native to South Africa. Protea flowers are large and don’t have petals, which explains their rather tough exterior. The colourful parts of Protea flowers are bracts, not petals, which surround the tiny fluffy true flowers in the centre of each flowerhead. There are many species used as cut flowers, the most common are Pink mink (P. neriifolia), Pink Ice (a P. neriifolia hybrid), and the spectacular King protea (P. cynaroides). Colours are mostly cream and pink, red, pale yellow or white. Breeding programs in Australia, South Africa and Hawaii have delivered a number of new hybrids. ‘Pink Ice’, for example, which is a P. neriifolia hybrid, was bred in Australia.

Proteas are borne on strong woody stems with tough fibrous green leaves. The leaves can discolour to form brown or black spots or marks before the flower dies, but recent selection and breeding work has gone some way to minimising this problem. Blackening is most common in Pink Mink, Pink Ice, P.eximia and Queen Protea.

Proteas are grown in the field on large bushes. Plantations are found all over Australia, and these flowers are also grown in South Africa, Israel and the US, including Hawaii.
