Bright and cheerful and a real summer favourite, sunflowers
traditionally only came with bright yellow petals surrounding a dark
centre. New varieties are now available which have pale brown, orange,
maroon or even striped petals, and green-yellow centres. There are even
double-petalled forms which are fluffy looking with no dark centre at
all.
Sunflowers are annuals, which means they only flower once,
then die off, and new seed need to be planted each season. They can grow
up to 3 metres tall, but cut sunflowers are rarely over 1 metre.
They are grown as field crops in the cooler areas near Melbourne, Sydney, in Tasmania and in SA and WA.
